Winter Meeting Wrap Up
Thank you to all of our members who participated in this year’s Winter Educational Program. Your response to our format change was overwhelmingly positive — with over 100 attendees, the meeting was standing room only. Thanks for letting us know your association is on the right track!
Some meeting highlights
- Unprecedented 1:1 ratio of manufacturer to supplier attendees (both on a company as well as individual level).
- With over 100 participants, NWDA exceeded attendance expectations, forcing our generous host (Architectural Testing) to postpone demolition of their large meeting room … and do a little re-construction to ensure that attendees had comfortable accommodations for the day. Many thanks go to Henry Taylor, Mike Mackereth, and all of the other incredibly flexible ATI team members who handled our 11th-hour game-plan changes with poise, grace, and humor!
- Monday’s welcome reception was a great kick-off to the impressive speaker program that followed on Tuesday. Table Top space was limited to the first several companies who signed up; next year we’ll be sure to have enough space to accommodate more interested vendors.
Speaker re-cap
Back by popular demand, Michael Collins of Jordan, Knauff & Company kicked off the program with an updated outlook of the residential and commercial window and door industry. Collins was followed by a Codes & Specs update presented by ATI’s Mike Mackereth. Jon Hill of Keystone Certifications, and Scott Swaltek of ATI then teamed up to review new glass certification requirements for 2010, and quality control to ensure fill rates and retention.
Following lunch, attendees had the opportunity to hear about the joys of NFRC enforcement from NFRC’s Ray McGowan. The day was wrapped up by Marc LaFrance of the US Department of Energy who spoke to changes in the EPA organizational structure, new lead abatement rules for replacement windows, .30/.30, and the “R-5” window program.
Meeting presentations now available
Didn’t have enough elbow room to take notes at the meeting? Weren’t able to clear your schedule to get out to York?
Or maybe you were one of the unlucky few who were turned away because the 2010 Winter Meeting was overwhelmingly successful and beyond capacity!
Whatever your reasons for wanting them may be, please visit the industry resource section of NWDA.net today to download copies of the meeting presentations.
Board members unanimously elected
Another meeting highlight was the election of Stephen Chen of Crystal Windows, and Sue Dixon of Southwest Vinyl Windows to Active Director positions on the NWDA Board, as well as the election of Chris Cooper of Joseph Machine Company Inc. to an Associate Director position on the NWDA Board. They join returning board members to comprise the 2010 NWDA Board of Directors and Officers.

Technical Corner (Cont'd)
Although only a few states have already adopted the 2009 IECC (dark blue on map) and Standard 90.1-2007, all 50 states have agreed that they will update their codes to meet or exceed the stringency of these model codes.
Meeting or Exceeding the 2009 IECC
States adopting the 2009 IECC without amendments will adopt the fenestration requirements shown on the right. State Code Guides on how these requirements apply to individual states are available at www.reca-codes.org. Some states have residential energy codes that are not based on the IECC but can be considered at least equivalent to the 2009 IECC. California’s Title 24 is a case in point. Other states are planning to update their energy code based on Chapter 11 of the 2009 International Residential Code (IRC) rather than the 2009 IECC. Comparing these two model codes, however, the U.S. Department of Energy has determined that several of the IRC’s requirements, including some of its fenestration requirements, are weaker than the IECC’s. Therefore, DOE recommends that states basing their building energy code on the 2009 IRC should amend the code so as to bring its requirements in line with the IECC and in compliance with ARRA.
For fenestration, this means:
- In climate zones 1, 2 and 3, the IRC requires an SHGC of 0.35 or lower (0.40 or lower for impact resistant
fenestration in zones 2 and 3). DOE recommends that states amend the IRC to match the IECC’s requirements: an SHGC of 0.30 or lower for all fenestration in climate zones 1, 2 and 3. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) performed a limited analysis of the potential impact of lower SHGC limits on a typical house in representative locations in climate zones 1, 2 and 3. According to this simulation analysis, a 0.35 SHGC requirement would mean higher energy cost in climate zones 1 and 2 compared to a 0.30 SHGC requirement. In climate zone 3, the picture is mixed. However, PNNL notes there are benefits to lower solar heat gains apart from total energy use impacts, such as peak load reductions, which benefit summer peaking utilities and the downsizing of air conditioners.
- Whereas the IECC has U-factor and SHGC trade-off caps, the IRC allows fenestration energy performance to be traded with non-fenestration energy performance without restrictions. DOE recommends that states amend the IRC so that it includes the IECC’s caps: 0.50 SHGC cap in climate zones 1, 2, and 3; 0.48 U-factor cap in zones 4 and 5; 0.40 U-factor cap in zones 6 thru 8. Although these caps are not expected to directly impact annual energy costs, they may benefit occupant comfort and/or resistance to moisture condensation.
Better Compliance also a Target
By accepting ARRA funding for code adoption, training and enforcement, all 50 states have also committed to develop and implement a plan, including active training and enforcement provisions, to achieve 90 percent compliance with the target codes by 2017, including measuring current compliance each year. To meet this commitment, states that have not yet done so will need to start work on updating their building energy codes as soon as practical. Codes education efforts by DOE, the Building Codes Assistance Project (www.bcap-ocean.org) and regional energy efficiency groups are assisting states in taking the first steps toward this goal of more advanced energy codes, better compliance, and thus more energy efficient construction.

Member Profile—Learning about your fellow NWDA members
SPOTLIGHT on Chris Cooper, Joseph Machine Company
Celebrating 10 years with Joseph Machine Company (JMC), Chris Cooper currently holds the position of Senior Sales Engineer. Chris is responsible for developing fabrication solutions for JMC’s client base and also mentors Sales Engineers with current project needs.
Prior to joining JMC, Chris held the position of Sales Manager for NapGladu, the largest cutting tool servicing company in the US. While at NapGladu, Chris developed a loyal customer base, supplying cutterstacks and sawblades for 99% of the existing manufactures and machinery suppliers. Recognizing the loyalty of his current customers, JMC approached Chris to develop a stronger presence in the Northeast for their company. With NapGladu being a major supplier to the fenestration industry, the move to JMC was naturally a successful fit.
While with NapGladu, Chris was honored with the Eagle Award for producing a new territory that repeatedly met the annual budget. Chris was also honored with a membership into the ½ million dollar, ¾ million dollar, and the million dollar club — the highest honor of all. At JMC, Chris has maintained the title of Top Sales Engineer for 5 years running by producing the highest volume of sales per individual accounts. Prior to starting his career, Chris earned his degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana where he majored in Architectural drafting.
One of the newest members of the NWDA Board of Directors, Chris was elected to an Associate Director position in January. Prior to his board involvement, Chris has represented JMC at NWDA Winter Meetings for several years. What’s kept Chris involved all this time? What else … the networking! NWDA offers a unique venue to hear about fellow members’ challenges, successes, and new directions. In addition to their membership with NWDA, JMC is also a member of AMAA.
While not working or participating in industry activities, Chris enjoys spending time with his wife of 22 years, his four children (2 girls and 2 boys), and his 4 grandchildren. He also serves as the Media Director for his local church where he develops presentations for multiple services, and enjoys aviation and the history associated with flight.
Founded in 1986, Joseph Machine Company (JMC) has become synonymous with the best in custom fabrication solutions. From the debut of their first automated saw machine in 1986 — still in production today — to the newest, high-quality standard line of machines launched in 2009, JMC has taken the lead in providing innovative manufacturing solutions to such varied industries as fenestration, solar, aluminum extruders, residential patio enclosures and solariums, fencing, lighting, wind power and transportation.
JMC has made a very visible change recently; by moving away from the Hammer-Tone Green on their machines to a Blue and White color, JMC now has a fresher, more-contemporary, look. Their latest product introduction is a full line of equipment developed specifically for the US market for flexible fabrication. This timely introduction has proven to be very successful for JMC — As Chris points out: “our software solutions are by far our greatest asset. JMC has a brilliant development team which constantly works to expand solutions with consistently successful results.”
